Graduate Profile:
Shyam Ramaiya

I joined AMCL as a graduate in 2018 after graduating with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Having spent some time in the Rail industry, I was interested in a career in Infrastructure and particularly within Asset Management.

Q. What do you enjoy about working at AMCL?

At AMCL, I get to work with some of the best thought-leaders within Asset Management, where I am able to bring my own ideas to the table and develop new thinking. We are a close-knit team and I feel like I’m learning every day.

I enjoy and always have enjoyed solving problems and building relationships with people and at AMCL I have had the opportunity to do both of those things. We have a wealth of resources and tried and tested frameworks to help our clients solve their problems, but at the same time, we are continually developing new products to keep up with the pace of change that’s happening within Infrastructure.

Q. How has your career at AMCL progressed?

I was exposed to a great level of responsibility when I joined AMCL as a graduate. I believe that the best way of learning is by doing and, as a graduate, I had the opportunity to manage small projects with clients and make large contributions to business and product development work. I also had the opportunity to undertake the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Certificate and Diploma in Asset Management, which helped me to build my knowledge and capability early on in my career. I’m also currently working towards my Chartership with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (iMechE) which AMCL have been supporting me with.

AMCL have a structured progression framework in place which has helped me to assess where I am in terms of development and to understand what’s needed in order to progress. I’ve also had continual support from my line manager, mentor and buddy to support my development.

Almost 4 years on, I am now a Senior Consultant and continue to learn and take on more responsibility. I am now in a position where I am leading projects, sourcing business opportunities and building relationships with our clients.

Q. What are some of the best opportunities you’ve had at AMCL?

I’ve been lucky enough to work on a number of different projects across a range of sectors, including Rail, Aviation and Water, with the opportunity to work on large infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and High Speed 2 (HS2). Through this, I have been able to expand my skill set and learn about different ways of working across multiple clients and sectors and use my portfolio of experience to solve problems and deliver value for our large client base.

I’ve also had the opportunity to go to attend conferences to network with people in the industry, training courses to boost my development and working on client sites – being able to travel as part of my job is an added bonus!
