NIE Wins Acclaim for Network Management

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), the electricity network company, has been awarded PAS 55 certification, an endorsement of NIE’s effective management of its network assets.

The certification audit was conducted by leading international Asset Management consultancy AMCL.

Andrew Sharp, Director of Assessment & Certification at AMCL, said:

I know the road to PAS 55 certification was a worthwhile challenge for the NIE team, and I have been deeply impressed with the organisation’s commitment to Asset Management throughout the process. I am now looking forward to seeing how they further embed and develop their capabilities.”

The PAS 55 international standard for the optimal management of physical assets, certifies NIE’s asset management practices, at a time when infrastructure investments, performance standards and developing a futureproof network are all becoming increasingly critical.

For us now to be PAS 55 certified gives a clear external endorsement of that.”



NIE employs over 1,300 people and has a network of over 45,000km of overhead lines and underground cables, including thousands of substations and mini pillars throughout Northern Ireland.

David Guiney, NIE Project Manager, said the commitment from all employees was critical in achieving certification. David said:


“We introduced ‘Route 55’, an improvement programme for managing the network assets in March, enabling us to inform everyone in NIE about our plans and how their individual roles contribute. The great support from staff has meant we have achieved PAS 55 certification in record time, and going forward, we will continue to enhance our management of the network for the benefit of all our customers.”
